Avgonyma village lies in the middle of Chios Island. It is 20 Kilometers far from Chios town. Avgonyma uniquely combines the feeling of a mountainous settlement with a bird's eye view to the Aegean Sea.
It is one of the most well-preserved fortified settlements with the typical structure of the west coast villages that were exposed to piracy.
Near Avgonyma village, you can visit Anavatos. It is amphitheatrically built on a rocky mountain. It's natural fortification implys that it must have been built for defensive reasons during the piracy period. Houses are single-floored with a narrow front and built from grey stone. On the top of the village there is the church of Taxiarches with a typical two-aisled basilica style.
